Journalism is the form of writing where someone writes for newspapers, magazines, new websites or prepares news to be broadcasted. Journalism’s core is to be informative and to be viewed by all. Without journalism people’s source of news can be corrupt, leading them to believe a variety of fake news which can be incredibly biased or just down right incorrect.

The basic purpose of journalism is to provide news to all groups of people. By having a trusted source catered towards you, you are able to spread that information and make “the best possible decisions” as said by the American Press Institute. With journalism’s relevancy decreasing each year, the profession is slowly losing its respect, practically forcing society to spin their own false news.

As Mr. Cantwell once said, the world is relying on our generation to create a new wave of journalism. One that accommodates for all genders, religions, sexualities and races.

Journalism creates a space where all people can equally share their views. Whether their voice has been silenced or disregarded, journalism has formed a safe, equal in-between for everyone. The difference however is that journalism acts as a platform to amplify voices which is extremely beneficial. With the wide range of topics for people to circle on, no one’s opinion is unjust no matter how different it may be.

Another thing that journalism highlights is how it broadcasts oppressed voices, such as the LGBTQ+ community, POC, trauma victims, mental health survivors and so on. Being able to speak up about their injustice allows for more people to reach out to them, sharing experiences and spreading their news.

Without a transparent news system, we crumble. Falling to governmental ideologies and lies, having civilian’s voices acts as a neutral ground. Although journalism is becoming more and more opinionated, having an open source that isn’t ruled by the government makes people independent. The issue with censorship in journalism comes into play once the government decides to take control.

Using North Korea and Russia as an example, their news systems are censored and are fully controlled by their governments. They have set rules of what can and can’t be broadcasted, as well as government propaganda embedded deeply within their stories. Censorship only corrupts people’s voices, silencing them to a point where they won’t understand what’s right and what’s wrong.

Throughout the years journalism has changed, employed jobs, amplified voices and broadcasted news to far and wide. With its lack of respect, many view journalism as something small while in retrospect it does keep the world running.

Journalism is not just a gift, it’s a valuable source that runs so deeply. Journalism matters, someday everyone will see why.
